Dear California Coalition Members and Supporters of CA FLP,

We have exciting news. FLP's Resources for Learning Second Edition of 950 pages has been printed and is being used in California. I have been plugging away with CA FLP in a low key way but very busy. The 2nd edition arrived in early June and was distributed to our active facilitators. The price has increased because of printing, and we now charge $35.00 at workshops and $56.25 (shrink wrapped) for retail, including shipping. Both include CA State Standards.

During the summer I was invited to work with the Central Valley Ag Pavilion in Stanislaus County. I represented CA FLP at several meetings and trained 10 members from their curriculum committee using the new second edition of Resources for Learning. This is a very exciting program similar to what was planned as part of FLP's World Learning Center at the Presidio. I also planned for a workshop at the Presidio and a school in San Francisco, in co-sponsorship with the Aquatic Outreach Institute. These very successful workshops were held on two Saturdays in September with 36 participants. Stephen Andrews conducted the FLP part of the workshop and Cathy Spensley helped with registration.

During July and August I sent out over 125 letters to previous donors to FLP from California, along with the announcement of the printing of the second edition. Although we did receive some donations, this continues to be an area where we need help, as CA FLP has very limited funds. I am keeping the postal box at the Presidio for another year, but I have had the phone call forwarding service from the Presidio terminated as of November 1 to cut down expenses. I now use my home phone (650) 345-5178 and fax (650) 573-5527 for CA FLP business.

At the end of October I was busy at the CA AITC State Conference in San Mateo. I presented a workshop, three "make and take" sessions, hosted a luncheon table featuring FLP's "Breads Around the World" and had a CA FLP exhibit. This was a very successful conference and CA FLP was well represented.

National FLP is moving forward slowly and I still serve on the Steering Committee and Executive Board. Nebraska is our newest state. Please note that the National FLP Annual Conference and Symposium (Building Bridges of Understanding Between Agriculture and Education) will be close to California. These meetings, hosted by Nevada FLP, will be in Las Vegas on February 17-19, 2004. The symposium will be on Wednesday, February 18th. Please mark your calendar! Hopefully, we will have a good representation from supporters, coalition members and educators from California.

If you have any questions, ideas for funding, or any other ideas, please feel free to call me at (650) 345-5178.

Regards,

Elmer Eckart,
Volunteer Coordinator of CA Food, Land & People
